Monday, May 20, 2013 Classwork: Students had a quiz over the first few chapters of the book. Students turned in their in-class Reading Logs. The class began reading chapter five today. They also worked on their Author's Choice, Reading Log, and Character Development worksheets. Homework: None! Friday, May 17, 2013 Classwork: Students continued to fill out there Character Development and Author's Word Choice worksheets while they read. We reviewed a few of the characters in the Character Development sheet, and student's read silently for 25/30 minutes. Homework: Quiz over chapter one through four. Thursday, May 16, 2013 Classwork: Students worked on a mini lesson dealing with character point of view at the beginning of class. We also discussed the Character Development and Author's Word Choice worksheet in more detail. Students had the opportunity to read the last half of class. Homework: In class reading log due tomorrow Homework: Wednesday, May 15, 2013 Classwork: Students created folders for their paperwork for The Outsiders. Students received Character Development and Author's word choice worksheets. As students continue to read The Outsiders, they will be jotting down different words that they find unique or interesting in the book. They will also explain why the author chose this particular word. Students were given time to read the book in class. Homework: Reading log due tomorrow. Tuesday, May 14, 2013 Classwork: Students started a new unit, in which they will be doing individual reading on the novel The Outsiders. Students will no longer be required to fill out a home reading log, but will be required to fill out an in class reading log, which will be due every Monday. Students will read individually, throughout this unit, as well as work on mini lessons and participate in class, as well as group discussions. Students received a schedule for due dates of items and what we will be working on each week. Homework: Reading logs due tomorrow Monday, May 13, 2013 Classwork: Students worked in the coputer lab on their webquest for The Outsider, a novel we will be starting tomorrow. If students did not complete their webquest, they will be assigned as homework. Homework: Webquest, if not completed in class. Friday, May 10, 2013 Classwork: Students continued working in the computer lab on their final drafts that were due today. Students who finished began working on a webquest of the 1960's in preperation for the upcoming novel that we will be reading in class, The Outsiders. We will finish our webquest on Monday in the computer lab. Homework: Reading log due Wednesday. Thursday, May 9, 2013 Classwork: Students worked in the computer lab on peer editing and were required to have two people check their rough drafts. Students who finished were then allowed to begin their final drafts. We will be working in the lab tomorrow and final drafts are due tomorrow. Homework: Final drafts due tomorrow! Wednesday, May 8, 2013 Classwork: Students finished working on their claims and shared them with their groups. If students had difficulties coming up with evidence or a claim for their papers, groups were encouraged to help. The class discussed commentary, pros/cons, and rephrasing their claims. Students were provided sometime at the end of class to work on their rough drafts, due tomorrow. Homework: Rough drafts due tomorrow. Tuesday, May 7, 2013 Classwork: Students turned in their reading logs, which were extra credit. There was an issue with the copy machine on the eighth grade floor, so a couple hours will recieve reading logs tomorrow. Students worked in groups to develop theories based on what they recorded on their charts from yesterday and we discussed these in class. We reviewed what a claim and text evidence are amd students provided examples. Students were given some time at the end of class to work on their claims for their papers and find text evidence. Homework: Students must develop a claim for their paragraph paper and provide two pieces of evidence from the text. Monday, May 6, 2013 Classwork: Students worked on a chart sbout conformity in The Giver and provided pros and cons for each. We discussed the focus question for our paragraph paper which is how conformity or independent choice affects ones enviroment. Homework: Extra credit reading log due tomorrow. April 29th - May 3rd Most students will be out of school due to the Washington trip this week. Students that remain will be working on a project for The Giver with Mrs. Massouris and Mrs. Harper. Friday, April 26, 2013 Classwork: Students received a crossword and worked on some of it in class. Students read an article Puerto Rico and how they may become the 51st state eventually. Students watched CNN student news. Homework: Extra credit reading log due Tuesday May 6th. We will begin working on a argument paragraph paper for The Giver, once we return from Washington DC. Thursday, April 25, 2013 Classwork: Students started with a journal write. The class reviewed chapters 15, 16, and 17. We read aloud chapter 18 and listened to chapter 19 from The Giver. Chapter 20 was sent home with the students. Homework: Vocabulary quiz tomorrow, students also need to finish chapter 20 reading. Wednesday, April 24, 2013 Classwork: Students turned inthe quizs they made yesterday for credit. Students reviewed chapters 13 and 14, we read chapters 15, 16 and 17 in class. Homework: Vocab test Friday. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 Classwork: Students turned in Reading Logs. Extra credit reading logs were given this week, as many students will be attending Washington D.C. The Logs will be due May 6th. The class had a journal write as well as a group discussion posted stating if they had the ability to give just one gift to just one person who would it be. Students read chapter 14, during which they created a 13 question quiz which involved chapters 13 and 14 only. Homework: Finish the quiz Monday, April 22, 2013 Classwork: Students received vocabulary words for the week, vocabulary quiz will be Friday. We will also have a quiz for The Giver encorporated with the vocabulary quiz. Students reviewed chapter 11 and read chapter 12 and 13 today. Students had a journal write as well as comprehension questions. Homework: Students Reading logs due tomorrow. Friday, April 19, 2013 Classwork: Students had a vocabulary quiz with questions from The Giver, it was open book.. Students also read chapter 11 of The Giver. Students filled out a journal entry and had a group discussion about their reading. Homework: Reading log due Tuesday. Thursday, April 18, 2013 Classwork: Students started with a journal write and group discussion about important memories in their lives. Students worked on a Conformity Chart while listening to chapter 11. Chart will be part of a arguement paragraph students will be working on after the book. Homework: Vocabulary quiz and vocabulary worksheet due tomorrow. Wednesday, April 17, 2013 Classwork: Students recieved a vocabulary worksheet which they worked on in class for a bit. It is due Friday, before the quiz. Students read chapters nine and ten today. We had a journal write as well as a group discussion about the book. Homework: Students Vocabulary Worksheet due Friday! Tuesday, April 16, 2013 Classwork: Students discussed chapter eight today. The class had a journal write as well as a group discussion posted concerning what they thought Jonas may be doing in his assignment. We also worked on some comprehension questions. We will also have a quiz for The Giver, chapters six through ten on Friday. Students reviewed chapter seven and read chapter eight today. Students had a journal write as well as a group discussion. Students filled out the assignment worksheet while reading. students were also given a symbolism worksheet at the end of class, which is due Monday. Homework: Symbolism worksheet due Monday. Reading log due Tuesday. Thursday, April 11, 2013 Classwork: Students worked on a Wordsplash worksheet, which is due tomorrow. Students read and discussed an article on unemployment for young people and an article on how movie stars are promoting products outside of their ethical boundaries. Students watched CNN Student News. Homework: Quiz tomorrow Wednesday, April 10, 2013 Classwork: Students discussed certain ceromonies they have attended and their feelings about those cermonies. Students listened to The Giver, chapter 6, on audio. Students filled out a Cermonies and Importance graph/matrix while listening to the story. We will discuss the cermonies, symbolic items, and reasoning behind each cermony tomorrow. Homework: Finish filling out the Cermony Graph/Matrix. Tuesday, April 9, 2013 Classwork: Students turned in reading logs today. Students took a multiple choice quiz about The Giver chapters 1-5. Students also took vocabulary definitions and finished copying them into their sheet, which will be due Friday before the quiz. Students also recorded synonyms and antonyms for their definitions. Homework: Finish synonyms and antonyms for vocabuary words. Monday, April 8, 2013 Classwork: Students received vocabulary words for the week, vocabulary quiz will be Friday. Students were posed two questions and discussed questions that related to The Giver. Students reviewed chapters 1-5 for quiz tomorrow. Homework: Students Reading logs due tomorrow. |
